JONES: Clare Drake disciples Hitchcock and Kingston join Hefford as Order of Hockey in Canada recipients When Bob Nicholson and Murray Costello invented the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2013, it was very much intended to be the hockey version of the Order of Canada. Unlike entry into the Hockey Hall of Fame, it wasn't created to further celebrate the greatness of the famed names in the history of game, although many would be the same.
The 6-10th overall picks from the 2015 NHL Draft With the Oilers picking 8th overall on Friday night at NHL Draft, I wanted to take a trip down memory lane and look at the players selected between 6-10 over the past five years to see if we can find any consistencies in who gets picked around that slot.
Inside the Nation: The Draft, Dallas Eakins and Broberg? It has been a little while since we last heard from the one they call Dustin Nielson. It's been a quiet news cycle but Dusty will be bringing you all kinds of draft outlook this week from Edmonton and then in Vancouver. The draft week Dusty is suited up and is in the mix.
Hitch: All In As Always Knowing Ken Hitchcock as I do, I'm confident saying that if he had his way, he'd be back standing behind the bench as the coach of the Edmonton Oilers next season. As we know, that's not going to happen because after less than a full season with the team he long wanted to coach, he's out in favour of Dave Tippett.
Do the Edmonton Oilers Have Any Real Buyout Options? Lucic's contract is virtually buyout-proof. Meant to be lockout-proof, his signing bonuses make the savings on a buyout hardly worth it. You can see in years 2020-21 and 2022-23, his cap hit is almost the same as it is now.
Bold move? Edmonton Oilers should consider trading down in the first round of the 2019 draft It almost never happens that a team with a draft pick in the Top Ten trades down in the draft order. It would be a bold move to do so. But Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland should seriously consider making such a move in the 2019 entry draft.
The 2019-20 NHL salary cap could be lower than expected Back in December at the NHL's annual Board of Governors meeting, it was speculated that the league's salary cap ceiling could rise to as high as $83 million for the 2019-20 season.
After Edmonton failures, Eakins has chance to rewrite script with Ducks After an extensive search, Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray has found who will be replacing… well, himself… behind the Ducks bench.
Do Any Buyouts Make Sense For The Edmonton Oilers? The Edmonton Oilers have a number of poor contracts that will continue to be anchors for this team over the next few years. Fans wanting to buyout these contracts and move on from them as quick as possible is certainly understandable, but would doing so with any of them really be the best move?
Questions, Rumours and more… Last night the New York Rangers acquired Jacob Trouba from the Winnipeg Jets for Neal Pionk and the 20th pick in Friday's NHL draft. Trouba wasn't going to re-sign with the Jets, so they had to move him, but this looks like a big win for the Rangers.
Oilers should trade Milan Lucic for Loui Eriksson if possible Milan Lucic has been linked to the Vancouver Canucks for a while, including a strange interview on TSN 1040 where Lucic muses about playing for the Canucks one day. The Oilers should resolve the Lucic situation. Both the team and the player want a split at this point.
Draft Week Post No. 3: Letting the Days Go By I always wonder how many draft lists change after the McKenzie final arrives. Can you imagine being a scout in an obscure area, maybe no one else scouts your region, and some guy shows up on McKenzie's list?
Fixing the Oilers Offense: Joonas Donskoi After dealing with the IMMENSE grief resultant from the news that Radko Gudas was traded earlier today, I figure there's no better time to begin writing about Joonas Donskoi then now! This will be the first in a series of shorter segments written on forward targets heading into the offseason.
Stanley Cup Odds: Opening Betting Line for 2019/20 Edmonton Oilers Despite 100-point campaigns from both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl this past season the Edmonton Oilers finished ahead of only the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference standings as they missed the playoffs yet again. That has the Oilers sitting well down the opening 2020 Stanley Cup odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Hot Links: Tuesday, June 18 A little bit from columns A and B.
BLH Oilers Mailbag: 2019 NHL Draft SPECIAL with @KeithFries and @TPEHockey I wouldn't do that trade. Question #6: Who, in your opinion, is the most underrated player? The most overrated player? Max: My pick for most underrated would be Domenick Fensore. He's a 5'7" defenseman with high caliber offensive tools. A top-5 skater that defend both sides of the ice.
Fort Saskatchewan’s Kirby Dach could go in the NHL Draft’s Top 5 When they call his name at the NHL Draft in Vancouver on Friday, Kirby Dach might be tempted to whisper 'finally." And not because he might have to wait four or five picks before somebody takes him in the first round, but because he's been waiting 10 or 11 years.
BLH Guest Post: A 2019 NHL Mock Draft by Terrance Grise If you think you've read every 2019 mock draft you can handle then you're wrong cause I've got one more for you! Don't worry it is slightly expedited as I chose to only cover the first 15 picks. I am a big draft nerd largely due to Edmonton's positional tendencies over the past decade.
Real Life Podcast Episode 126: Raptors, Blues, and Owners Taking the Trophy After a one-week hiatus due to power upgrades getting done at Nation HQ, the boys are back with a brand new episode of the Real Life Podcast. This week, the guys talk a whole lot of sports as both the NHL and NBA wrapped up their respective seasons.
It is Draft Week… This is one of my favourite weeks during the NHL calendar. I've covered the NHL draft since 2007, and it has changed a lot in the past 12 years. The draft itself has had some change, but this lead up week has become one of the most active times for trades in the NHL.
Anaheim Ducks name Dallas Eakins new head coach The Anaheim Ducks announced Monday the hiring of Dallas Eakins as their head coach. "This is a tremendous honour for my family," said Eakins, 52, who most recently was head coach of the Ducks' American Hockey League affiliate, the San Diego Gulls. "I am truly humbled.
At Random: The List So, if the first round of the NHL Entry Draft goes exactly the way Bob McKenzie of TSN envisions it, the Edmonton Oilers will be selecting Russian right winger Vasili Podkolzin in Vancouver on Friday with the eighth overall pick.
Oilers' Offseason Targets: Joonas Donskoi New Oilers GM Ken Holland has, multiple times, said that improving the forward corps and building the bottom-six are both keys to the off-season. It stands to reason that the additions at the bottom of the forward depth chart will come via free agency.
Trade Rumors Swirling around the Oilers - Which are Likely? I suppose it's inevitable that when a team hires a new GM that a lot of trade rumors starting churning. After all, when a new GM is hired it's for a reason - his predecessor didn't do the job and now he has to clean up the mess.
